You know the song Blackbird that goes “Blackbird singing in the dead of night.  Take these broken wings and learn to fly.. All your life, you were always waiting for this moment to arise.”  Well that song has been playing on repeat in my head for months, ever since I began this piece that features a crow sitting on a branch under the moonlight.

This piece is a bit of a departure for me.  I have been experimenting with adding beading and embroidery to my work.  But this is the first piece where I completely dove into the process.  And I did it rather blindly. What I mean, is that I had a general idea of what I wanted, but I really allowed the subject and the materials to guide me to the right path forward.  I found the whole process both inspiring and a little bit scary.

“You Were Always Waiting,” explores how we arrive at a point in our lives when we truly discover who we are and what we are capable of achieving.  It is a window that looks out into possibilities. An additional aspect of the piece reminds us that things are not always as they first appear.  Birds have more cones in their eyes than humans, which essentially means that they can see a wider spectrum of colours than we can.  Birds that appear black to us, do not appear black to them.  “Take these sunken eyes and learn to see.” See others in a new way.  See ourselves in a new light.  Free ourselves from the darkness and fear that holds us back. The time is now.  “You were always waiting for this moment to be free.”
