The humble little prairie crocus, the first flower of spring, dancing on its flexible stalk, dots of purple in a brown and yellow landscape. The bumblebees that seem to be napping under the fuzzy mauve blankets of their petals. And we look and smile.

Prairie smoke,

wind, stone,

and water.

Harbinger of Spring,

drawing out

Winter’s last breath.

Trembling and

bending before

the gale,

a slender stem,

no blast can break.
