An Evening of Culture & Conversation

Mingle with artists, collectors, and community members in one of Saskatoon’s most historic venues.

    Beads have always been more than decoration. Around the world, they’ve been used to tell stories, represent beauty, express identity, and serve spiritual and social purposes. From royal garments in West Africa to offerings in temples in Asia, beads have carried meaning far beyond what we wear on our bodies.

    In Beyond Adornment, artist Valerie Wiebe and designer Onyx by Valentina explore this deeper history through art and fashion.

    Valerie’s newest series of paintings incorporates beadwork directly onto the canvas, blurring the lines between fine art and craft. Each painting is paired with a handcrafted beadwork dress by Valentina — together forming a shared visual story about how adornment connects us across cultures and generations.

    Meet The Artists

    Valerie Wiebe

    Valerie Wiebe is a Canadian artist and designer based in Langham, Saskatchewan. Through her studio, Wiebe Works Creative Productions, she creates paintings that blend acrylics and beadwork to explore beauty, connection, and history. Her work transforms beads from simple adornment into storytelling elements—symbols of humanity, landscape, and light.

    Onyx by Valentina

    Onyx by Valentina is a luxury design brand by Valentina Utoh, known for its handcrafted, high-fashion beaded artistry in clothing and interior design. Originally from Nigeria but now based in Canada, the brand creates unique, wearable art, with a focus on handmade beadwork. The brand has a dedicated following and has been recognized internationally for its artistic craftsmanship.

    Culinary Pairings

    Each series in Beyond Adornment tells the story of a place — its colors, textures, and traditions — paired with a culinary creation inspired by the same region. Guests are invited to experience the dialogue between art, fashion, and food through all the senses.

    Saskatchewan

    Beet-cured Diefenbaker trout with smoked dill yogurt and trout roe on crostini — a nod to prairie landscapes, changing light, and the renewal of spring.

    Uganda, Nigeria & Morocco

    Mandazi (sweet fried bread), Jollof rice, and Zaalouk on Moroccan flatbread — flavors that celebrate warmth, rhythm, and the rich vibrancy of African culture.

    Portugal, Spain & Joshua Tree

    Patatas Bravas and Pastéis de Nata — dishes inspired by sunlight, movement, and reflection across continents.

    What to Expect at the Event

    • Collaboration

      Original bead-adorned paintings by Valerie Wiebe paired with handcrafted couture dresses by Onyx by Valentina.

    • Storytelling

      Each painting and dress pairing will be introduced and explained through storytelling by the artist and designer.

    • What to Wear

      We love an opportunity to get fancy so wear your best beaded piece, shiny outfits, or whatever makes you feel the most glamorous! 

    • Schedule

      6:00 PM Doors open
      Cash bar throughout the evening

      Short break between each collection
      8:30 PM Formal program concludes
      Shopping + mingling until last call at 10:00 PM

      All paintings and dresses are available to purchase at the event by cash or card. (see event manager to purchase – these are often one of a kind pieces so buy fast if you love it!)
